After 16 years, he’s stepping down.  Who should replace him?

There’s some initial buzz about Tina Fey, Chris Rock, and others.  Who do you think should replace him?

I keep seeing the same names pop up (Aisha Tyler!), but I suspect it will none of those people. (Although the suggestion of Tig Notaro is intriguing.)

Tina Fey would work… Not that I watch the show… but Tina Fey has a history of being the source of “news” for low-information voters.

a) As a longtime fan of Ms. Fey’s (and even including her time on SNL’s Update), I think The Daily Show is a poor fit for her; b) Given the projects she has focused on in recent years, there is no way she would have any serious interest in this job.

Brian Williams.

That would work.

Oh give me a break. Would that just not be the best? I would have to say it would be, I must say.

while Jon Stewart clearly started in comedy, the Daily Show is more than just comedy… it is deep political satire and requires someone with a deep curiosity and unique observational skills.  I am trying to think of who could fit the bill… but its difficult to fill those shoes.  Tina Fey was definitely a first thought, and I think she would do well — but there is something in the unassuming, white male privilege of Jon Stewart that allowed him to question and comment without becoming the story.  I’d be intrigued by some of the former Daily Show team members — for one, Mo Rocca could be interesting… or Ed Helms…

but in the end, I don’t think there is another Jon Stewart

Oh give me a break. As if my good friend Martin Short wouldn’t be a hoot. It’s not like he’s busy doing ^cough* *Mulaney cancelled at last* *cough* anything else.

Nobody can fill Jon’s shoes.

Oh give me a break. As if his shoes are filled with some kind of impermeable substance, such as concrete or perhaps molten lava, which wouldn’t be impermeable per se, but would be equally challenging. Either substance would make the shoes difficult to walk in, or at least agonizingly painful, I would think.

Stephen Colbert!!! …oh… wait.
John Oliver!!!! …oh… wait.
Larry Wilmore!!! oh… wait.

If they’re not interested in giving up their new shows, then how about the return of Rob Cordry… or Samantha Bee and her hubby tag-teaming it… or Stephanie Miller…

I’m hoping someone will convince Mr. Stewart that he could be a great force in news reporting and put him in Brian Williams’s chair!

Zach Galifianakis. Watch any clip of Between Two Ferns and you’ll be convinced. Sublime.
