Sting Is a Horrible Hack

When the Police debuted in 1977, they seem fresh. Their power came from their diversity: Sting was a jazz guy, Stewart Copeland was into the DIY aesthetic of punk, Andy Summers was from prog rock. The whole thing was built on Sting’s songwriting.

But then the group broke up and Sting steadily descended into the hackiest lite rock faux jazz blah fest. Has he written a memorable song since the early ’90s? Are any of his solo albums worth listening to these days? I don’t think so. It calls into question whether he was ever talented.

Oh give me a break. Could there be any greater talent than Mr. Sting? You can tell he’s talented because he goes by only one name — and one name that ISN’T EVEN A NAME. That’s the surest sign of a great talent, I must say.

You think you’re being sarcastic, but let me point out: Cher.

Oh give me a break. Is not the great Cher a one-named goddess? Lest it be obvious, I will endeavor to allude to her name, singly syllabic though it might be, as being, as it were, an actual name, and not, one must agree, a verb more typically used to describe that painful action of a buzzing bee inflicting pain upon oneself, most often in an especially vulnerable part of the toe or elbow, I might add. To which I would add just three words and, if you will permit me, two additional pieces of punctuation (not including the colon and close-parenthesis that shall follow immediately after this prefacatorial remark): Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves.

Disagreeing. He is extremely talented as a songwriter, musician, and performer. Many of his song lyrics can stand alone as poetry. I could see why some Police fans didn’t like his path. He was also bold enough to put an original musical on Broadway, and smart enough to see when it was in danger of closing that he should join the cast which he did, in a supporting role. Oh well haters gonna hate but I don’t think many others could top him.
